(1000 Islands New York/Loons)

What a gorgeous bird. Very elusive as well, any time you are close enough to take a decent photo the bird will dive and resurface 200 or 300 yards in a seemingly random direction. This is further complicated by the fact that they prefer to show themselves when the light conditions are not good. Usually when luck is with you and you come across one close enough to photograph the camera is not ready and after fumbling to set it up the opportunity is gone.

This bird is a great swimmer. It has the ability to control blood flow in different parts of its body to better its ability to remain under water during a dive. Also its legs are so far back on its body that it can not take off from land, but of course this allows it to swim better.
